A dog diaper that doesn't fit is worse than no diaper. Too tight and it restricts movement; too loose and it leaks at the first opportunity. Dog underwear sizing is simpler than it looks โ once you know what to measure.
The One Measurement That Actually Matters
Most size charts list weight ranges, and most dog owners use weight to pick a size. Both are wrong.
Weight tells you roughly how big a dog is. It tells you nothing about their shape. A 25-pound Bulldog and a 25-pound Whippet have wildly different waist measurements โ and a diaper sized for one will fail on the other.
The correct measurement for dog diaper sizing is waist circumference: the widest point around the belly, typically 2โ3 inches in front of the base of the tail.
How to Measure Your Dog's Waist
- Use a soft fabric measuring tape (or a piece of string you can measure after)
- Have your dog stand normally โ not sitting, not stretched out
- Wrap the tape around the widest point of the belly
- Note the measurement with 1โ2 fingers of slack for comfort
Measure twice. Dogs squirm.
Dog Diaper Size Chart
Use your waist measurement against this chart. When between sizes, always go up.

|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 8โ12" | 3โ8 lbs | Chihuahua, Yorkie, Toy Poodle, Papillon |
| S | 12โ16" | 8โ18 lbs | Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Mini Dachshund, Maltese |
| M | 16โ22" | 18โ40 lbs | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, French Bulldog, Basenji |
| L | 22โ28" | 40โ70 lbs | Labrador, Golden Retriever, Boxer, Husky |
| XL | 28โ36" | 70โ100 lbs | German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Great Dane, Malamute |
Special Fit Considerations by Breed Type
Deep-Chested Breeds
Breeds like Greyhounds, Whippets, and Dobermans have a significant drop from chest to belly. For these dogs, waist measurement often puts them in a smaller size than their chest width suggests. Go with waist measurement and ensure the diaper's design has an adjustable belly strap โ not just a fixed closure.
Barrel-Bodied Breeds
Bulldogs, Pugs, and Basset Hounds are wider through the belly relative to their height. For these breeds, the waist measurement is accurate, but confirm the diaper's rise (the front-to-back depth) is sufficient to provide real coverage.
Long-Backed Breeds
Dachshunds and Corgis need extra coverage front-to-back. A standard diaper may shift toward the tail. Look for designs with a longer pad zone or consider sizing up for better coverage.
Senior Dogs
Senior dogs often lose muscle mass, which can change their waist measurement significantly. Re-measure every few months if your dog is managing age-related incontinence. An ill-fitting diaper on a senior dog can cause skin irritation quickly.
Signs Your Fit Needs Adjusting
- Leaks at the leg openings: Size up or tighten the closure
- Red marks after removal: Size up โ too tight
- Escaping the diaper: Size down or adjust all closures
- Diaper shifting backward: Consider a harness-style or suspender attachment
- Tail hole gaping: Too large โ size down
When to Remeasure
Dogs' bodies change. Remeasure if:
- Your dog gains or loses more than 5% of body weight
- You're switching from a heat cycle to incontinence use (different frequency, different fit tolerance)
- Your dog is a puppy (monthly remeasure until 18 months)
- The current diaper is showing signs of improper fit (see above)
A correct fit means your dog forgets they're wearing it. That's the goal.
